Return to the Cancerlynx IndexSurvival Stories in Silicon Valley
Warren C. HeggA year ago, seven women who won their battle with breast cancer came to the Digital Clubhouse Network in Sunnyvale, California, to share their experience by documenting their personal journey from diagnosis to recovery. Their goal was to use the power of new digital media to help broaden public awareness, to educate and inspire, and to save lives by encouraging everyone to learn more about this dreaded illness that effects one out of every 8 women in her lifetime.
Together with a small band of dedicated volunteers, these women- few of whom had any prior knowledge of computers-produced a collection of poignant "digital stories". Stories of strength and determination, of overcoming fear, of the power of love, of the importance of family, and of how facing the prospect of death changes forever how we look at life. Handcrafted with care by the survivor herself, each of these stories has a unique integrity and the power to inspire that is seldom to be found in traditional media.
During the past year, more than fifty women have participated in what has become an ongoing series of quarterly workshops called the "Digital Healing Project". On Wednesday evening, the digital stories created by these women will be shared with their families, friends and the public at a special Premiere Night at the Sunnyvale Clubhouse.
The women's stories will be shown at the New York Information Technology Center, home of the second prototype Digital Clubhouse, later this month. The Project will continue at both Clubhouses, beginning in January 2000.
